Removing Textured Implants may be "considered reasonable" to reduce the risks of a rare cancer.

Updated: Mar 18

The American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) convened an expert panel to review the evidence on managing cancer risks associated with breast implants. The panel recommended considering the removal of textured implants, stating it may be reasonable to do so to reduce the risk of a rare cancer. They emphasized shared decision-making between patients and surgeons and highlighted the potential benefits of prophylactic removal, especially for macrotextured implants. The AAPS's recommendations also included the discontinuation of macrotextured implants and the sharing of surveillance data by manufacturers.
